An integral part of Mexinol’s values and practices is to operate in an environmentally responsible and socially sustainable manner. We are committed to the highest environmental and sustainability standards in construction and operation, in accordance with the following:

  • World Bank Guidelines on Environment, Health and Safety.
  • Performance Standards of the International Finance Corporation, 2012.
  • Ecuador Principles IV, 2020.
  • Common Approaches of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
  • Regulations and local permits of the Government of Mexico.
  • EU standards for the environment (eg BAT / BREF).
  • Independent Environmental Impact Assessment Studies in accordance with Mexican regulations.

  • Site selection outside the RAMSAR zone to respect environmentally sensitive areas and have direct access to the infrastructure required to minimize the plant's overall environmental footprint.
  • Our site and related infrastructure do not touch or come close to any protected natural habitat, including mangroves.
  • Lower emissions during operations through the implementation of Thyssenkrupp's AdWinMethanol® technology, one of the most efficient methanol production technologies on the market.
  • A novel solution for wastewater management and water consumption that does not affect natural water resources, such as bay water and canal water.
  • Engagement with the local community in a direct and positive way, listening and addressing reasonable and serious concerns.

The 169 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN) make up the roadmap of the so-called 2030 Agenda. We have aligned our efforts to contribute to the fulfillment of these goals. We are especially focused on promoting the sustainable development goals that are most relevant to our industry and project, including the following:

Goal 6: Ensure access to water and sanitation for all

Mexinol is committed to responsible water management, that is why we are implementing an innovative solution for water consumption and wastewater management. We will recycle and treat wastewater for industrial use, which avoids not only the disposal of wastewater in local and fragile ecosystems but also the use of water from natural sources.

Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation

We are committed to the highest environmental and sustainability standards in construction and operation. That is why we have developed various sustainability concepts in the design, construction and operations of Mexinol, including site selection, implementation of lower carbon methanol production technology, recycling and retreatment of wastewater in place. to use natural sources of water, and to nullify the impact on protected natural habitats, including mangroves.

Goal 15: Manage forests sustainably, combat desertification, halt and reverse soil degradation and loss of biodiversity

The plant site currently has no natural vegetation as it has been used for agricultural purposes for decades. As a result, we will not be impacting the forests and other protected natural vegetation in the construction of the plant.

Goal 8: Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all

Mexinol is expected to create up to 3,000 jobs during its construction and approximately 400 core jobs during operations. Economic research indicates that these basic jobs create up to seven times more jobs in businesses that provide goods and services to the community, such as grocery stores, hair salons, housing, entertainment, and other goods and services. Mexinol will also develop partnerships with local educational institutions to implement programs that develop technical and non-technical skills for students interested in careers in various industries. With the aim of generating decent employment opportunities at the local level, Mexinol is committed to providing a work environment that stimulates the personal and professional growth of all the members of our team through plans.

Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

We maximize the use of internal energy from water vapor to power critical equipment, thus reducing the need for external electrical power. This allows us to avoid consuming electricity, which contributes to carbon emissions. To actively participate in the energy transition to a low carbon world, we are implementing AdWinMethanol® technology, an efficient methanol production technology that is among the lowest emitting technologies on the market.

Goal 17: Revitalize global partnerships for sustainable development

We partner with companies, organizations and financial institutions dedicated to sustainable development. From the selection of sustainable technology to our innovative project structure designed to minimize our environmental footprint, including partnering with financial institutions that require the highest levels of sustainability in the projects it supports, Mexinol is dedicated to working with its stakeholders to ensure sustainable development.
